These figures are famously known in Russia as the Matryoshka  dolls. A set of a Matryoshka doll is made of wood which separates, top from bottom, to reveal a smaller figure of the same sort inside, which has, in turn, another figure inside of it, and so on. You can now have these figures in your hands. They are imported from Russia.
